1. A former British army major goes from security contractor to extreme restauranteur in Iraq’s Green Zone as he opens a bar that offers peacekeepers, foreign soldiers and mercenaries a calm respite and fine bottle of Bordeaux.

“James bought a contraband moped, a Honda 150, and scooted around Green Zone wearing bespoke suits brought from home. Just because you’re in country, he thought, doesn’t mean your standards have to slip. He was a soldier if fortune, but of a gentlemanly sort.”

Baghdad Country Club - The Atavist, by Joshuah Bearman

Every morning on my way to work I listen to the Madeleine Brand Show on KPCC, and it is usually great, but today there was an amazing story about the Baghdad Country Club, which was a dinky bar in the middle of the Green Zone in Iraq.

Basically, this story sounds like a modern day Catch-22 (or a similar tone of Three Kings) and if I had all the money I would buy the film rights and turn it into a movie right now.

The Atavist publishes long form non-fiction pieces that are too long for magazines but too short for books, which is genius.  You can get a multimedia iPad/iPhone/etc package of the story for $2.99 or an iBooks/Kindle text version of the story for $1.99, which is just awesome.

  5. Listen to Joshuah Bearman talk about Baghdad Country Club, the true story behind war-torn Iraq’s most legendary bar, with KPCC’s Madeleine Brand

  6. James, the ultra-suave subject of our story Baghdad Country Club, made an appearance at New America NYC to discuss his legendary bar in the Green Zone with the story’s author Joshuah Bearman and war photographer Bob Nickelsberg. Listen to the podcast of the event.

    Here’s the event description:

The Baghdad Country Club, a bar in the Green Zone and the subject of the recent story in The Atavist by the same name, was one man’s attempt to create an oasis in the heart of a conflict. In a place where even beer runs were a matter of life and death, the proprietors struggled against the entropy of war to find a respite from the world outside. How do writers, photographers, and outsiders thrown into a conflict zone both survive and represent the strange, dangerous, and even comical aspects of life outside of the heat of battle? What role does humor play in defending their psyches against the terrors around them?

  9. Meet the daring entrepreneur behind the Baghdad Country Club at our New America event on Wednesday night! After listening to him narrate this video, you’ll really want to have a drink with him. RSVP
